New Delhi: After the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) demonetized the Rs 2,000 note, people are using the notes of this denomination mainly to buy fuel, jewelry, and groceries. The RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes on May 19. However, people have been given time till September 30 to deposit these notes in their accounts or change them in the bank.
The RBI had recently said that almost half of the Rs 2,000 notes in circulation have been returned in about two weeks. Opinions of more than one lakh people from 22 states were taken in this survey. The survey said people are using the Rs 2,000 note to buy petrol and diesel, gold and jewelry, and daily groceries.
When asked whether they faced difficulties in exchanging their notes, 61 percent of the respondents claimed that they did not face any difficulty in the process. 75 percent of people in Kerala said this.
On the other hand, 53 percent of people in Andhra Pradesh and 50 percent in Tamil Nadu said that they did not face any problem in exchanging notes. And 42 percent said that the local people refused to accept these notes from them.
51 percent of the people surveyed were of the opinion that they should have been given more time to exchange notes. While 44 percent said that the daily limit for exchanging notes should have been more than Rs 20,000.
