Barcelona: Chinese tech giant Honor has announced its latest flagship smartphone, the Magic 6 Pro, which features a novel eye-tracking AI function that can remotely control a car with just a glance at the phone screen.
The company demonstrated the innovative feature at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Sunday, where it also launched the Magic 6 Pro globally. The phone, which boasts a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, and a 180 MP periscope telephoto camera, was previously available only in China.
The eye-tracking AI, powered by Eyeware’s GazeSense software, allows users to perform various actions on their car, such as starting or stopping the engine or moving it forwards or backward, by looking at the corresponding icons on the phone screen for a few seconds. The feature can be useful for getting the car out of tight parking spots without having to be inside the vehicle.
Honor said the eye-tracking AI is already available in China and it is working to integrate it commercially overseas. The company also said it is developing a large language model (LLM) similar to ChatGPT, which will enable more natural and intelligent interactions between the phone and the user.
Honor, formerly a sub-brand of Huawei, was sold to a consortium of state-owned firms in November 2020, amid US sanctions that crippled Huawei’s smartphone business. Honor has since regained access to key components and software, such as Qualcomm’s chips and Google’s services, and has been expanding its global presence.
