Hong Kong bans flights from eight countries including India-US amid Omicron threat

Hong Kong: Hong Kong on Wednesday announced a two-week ban on flights from India and seven other countries in view of the increasing cases of the Omicron form of Covid-19. At the same time, it was decided to stop about 2500 passengers on a ship for investigation.

The two-week ban on passenger flights from India, Pakistan, Australia, Canada, France, the Philippines, Britain, and the US will be effective from Sunday and 21 Will be in force till January. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has announced that restaurants will be closed after 6 pm for two weeks starting Friday. Playgrounds, bars, and beauty salons will also remain closed during this period.

“We have to stop the epidemic to make sure there is no major outbreak again in the community,” Lam told a news conference. Also said that Hong Kong has reached the ‘brink of another wave’ of the epidemic. These steps have been taken after several cases of infection of the Omicron form of coronavirus in the last week. On Tuesday, 114 patients were confirmed to be infected with this form. Most of these people came from other countries.

Hong Kong has detained about 2500 people on board the ship ‘Royal Caribbean Spectrum’ for a coronavirus investigation. It was asked to return after nine passengers were found infected on the ship that set out on Sunday. The ship returned to Hong Kong on Wednesday and passengers have been asked to remain on board until the test results are out. As of Tuesday, a total of 12,690 cases of Kovid-19 have been reported in Hong Kong and 213 people have died due to infection.
