Washington: Indian-American politician Sarah Gideon won the Democratic Party primary for the US Senate seat from the state of Maine. She will now contest Republican Senator Susan Collins from here in the November election. Gideon is currently the Speaker in the Merajya Legislative Assembly. The 48-year-old Gideon is the second Indian-American to win in the Senate primary race this time.
Earlier industrialist Rick Mehta won the Republican primary from New Jersey. Gideon and Mehta are the first Indian-Americans to win primaries in their respective states. Gideon’s father is Indian-American and mother-American. Gideon raised $ 23 million, a record for the region. If she wins in November, she will become the second Indian-American woman to be a part of the US Senate. Kamala Harris from California is the first Indian-American woman to achieve this feat.
