New Delhi: A novel by famous Hindi writer Geetanjali Shree has received the International Booker Prize. He has won this award for his novel ‘Rat Samadhi’. The English translation of ‘Tomb Of Sand’ has been done by famous American translator Dez Rockwell. It is published in English by Tilted Axis Press as “Tomb of Sand”.
This novel in Hindi is published by Rajkamal Prakashan. The special thing is that ‘Ret Samadhi’ is the first such work in Hindi that reached the long list and shortlist of the International Booker Prize. At the same time, this novel has also won the Booker Prize. Let us inform you that apart from ‘Sand Samadhi’ of Gitanjali Shri, 13 other works were also on the long list of Booker Prize.
Geetanjali Shree’s novel ‘Tomb Of Sand’ competed with five books in the world for the literary prize of £50,000, or about Rs 50 lakh. The prize money will be divided between the writer and the translator.
Hailing from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, Geetanjali Shree is active in the world of writing for the last three decades. Several story collections including three novels of Shree have been published. ‘Ret Samadhi’ by Geetanjali Shree is his fifth novel. The first novel is ‘Mai’.
After this, his novel came in the nineties, whose name was ‘Hamara Shahar Us Baras’. This novel is one of the serious novels focused on communalism. A few years later, Gitanjali Shree’s ‘Tirohit’ came. This novel has also been discussed as the first novel written on female homosexuality in Hindi. His fourth novel is ‘Blank Space’ and ‘rat Samadhi’ was published a few years back.
However, many people did not know Gitanjali Shree even after writing more than one novel continuously. But, now after ‘Sand Samadhi’ everyone has become familiar with the name of Gitanjali Shree. When ‘Sand Samadhi’ was included in the long list of Booker Prize, then Gitanjali Shree suddenly came into the limelight and remained anonymous in the Hindi world.
