Sydney: On the occasion of the 50th birthday of legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar, a gate named after him was unveiled at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground on Monday. Tendulkar turned 50 on Monday. He scored 785 runs in five Tests at the SCG at an average of 157, with the highest score of 241 not out.
Tendulkar (Sachin Tendulkar) termed SCG as his favorite cricket ground outside India. “Sydney Cricket Ground has been my favorite ground outside India,” Tendulkar said in a statement issued by the SCG. I have fond memories of the SCG right from my first tour of Australia in 1991-92.
To mark 30 years of Brian Lara’s 277 at the SCG, a gate named after the legendary West Indies batsman was also unveiled. The two gates were unveiled by SCG Chairman Rod McGeoch and CEO Kerry Mather and Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley. Players will now enter the ground through the Lara-Tendulkar gate. A plaque has also been installed at both these gates describing the achievements of these two players and their records at the SCG.
Tendulkar said, “It is a great honor that the players will use the gate which has been named after me and my good friend Brian to enter the SCG. I express my gratitude to SCG and Cricket Australia for this. Will visit SCG soon.
Lara said, “I am deeply honored by this recognition from the Sydney Cricket Ground and I am sure Sachin must be feeling the same. My family and I have very special memories of this ground and I always enjoy visiting it whenever I am in Australia. Tendulkar and Lara have now joined the club of Donald Bradman, Alan Davidson, and Arthur Maurice who have gates at the SCG named after them.
