Key Points
- Price Reduction: The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets products under the Amul brand, has announced price cuts on over 700 product packs.
- Reason: The move is to pass on the full benefits of a recent GST rate reduction by the central government to consumers.
- Effective Date: The new, lower prices will be effective across India from midnight on Sunday, September 22, 2025.
- Affected Products: The price cuts apply to a wide range of items, including butter, ghee, ice cream, cheese, paneer, UHT milk, chocolates, and frozen snacks. The price of fresh pouch milk remains unchanged as it was already in the zero-GST slab.
- Competitor Action: Following a similar announcement, Mother Dairy has also reduced prices on its products from the same date.
New Delhi: In a move that will bring relief to households across India, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) has announced a significant price reduction across more than 700 product packs sold under the Amul brand. The decision, announced on Saturday, is a direct result of the company choosing to pass on the full benefits of a recent GST rate reduction to its customers. The revised prices will take effect nationwide from September 22, 2025.
The price revision covers a vast array of Amul’s product portfolio, including daily essentials and popular food items. Categories seeing a price drop include butter, ghee, UHT milk, ice cream, cheese, paneer, chocolates, bakery items, frozen snacks, condensed milk, and malt-based drinks. However, the company clarified that the price of fresh pouch milk will not change, as it has always been exempt from GST.
Key Price Reductions
The price cuts range from 3% to as high as 17% on certain items, making many everyday staples more affordable. Some of the notable revisions include:
- Ghee: Prices have been slashed by Rs 40 per litre, with the new price being Rs 610. The 5-litre tin will be cheaper by Rs 200, priced at Rs 3,075.
- Butter: The price of a 100g pack of Amul Butter has been reduced from Rs 62 to Rs 58.
- Cheese: A 1kg block of Amul processed cheese will now cost Rs 545, a reduction of Rs 30.
- Paneer: The MRP of a 200g pack of frozen paneer will be Rs 95, down from Rs 99.
- UHT Milk: Amul Gold (1-litre UHT) will now cost Rs 80 instead of Rs 83, and Amul Taaza (1-litre UHT) will be priced at Rs 75, down from Rs 77.
- Frozen Snacks: This category sees the steepest cuts, with some products like Amul Paneer Paratha becoming cheaper by up to 17%.
Boosting Consumption and Farmer Income
In its statement, GCMMF, a cooperative owned by 3.6 million farmers, expressed its belief that the price reduction will spur consumption of dairy products, particularly ice cream, cheese, and butter, where per capita consumption in India remains low. By making products more affordable, Amul aims to boost demand, which in turn will lead to turnover growth and benefit the farmers who own the cooperative.
This announcement from Amul follows a similar price cut declaration by its competitor, Mother Dairy, with both companies implementing the new rates from September 22.
