New York: For the first time, America Rhodes Scholars have been selected online due to the global epidemic of Corona Virus. Under this, 32 students have secured scholarships at Oxford University. Of these, 22 are ‘minorities’ (students of color) and 10 are black. Never before have so many black students been selected.
Elite Gerson, U.S. Secretary of the Rhodes Trust, announced Sunday the names of the 32 winners who will represent the U.S. at the Rhodes Scholar. It features four American-Indian students, Swati R. Srinivasan, Vijayasundaram Ramasamy, Garima P. Desai and Savrani Sanka.
“Never before have students been selected online for the Rhodes Scholar,” Gerson said. About 2,800 students from 288 colleges and universities applied for the scholarship.
Applications were sorted out by 16 committees of the Rhodes Trust and then the strong contenders were interviewed online. After this, two students from each district were selected. The winners include 17 women, 14 men and one transgender student.
The Rhodes Scholarship covers the full cost of two or three years of study at Oxford University in England. The Rhodes Scholarship was introduced in 1902 under the will of Cecil Rhodes.
