Vidisha: A case of peacock poaching has come to light in the district’s Lateri forest range, Kotra. The forest department team found four carcasses of the national bird peacock during a night patrol. The forest department team has recovered the four dead bodies and started an investigation on their behalf. Ranger Vinod Kumar Singh of the department said that the incident happened on the night of January 21.

The forest department team was on patrol in the forests of Kotra on the Semal Khedi road, during which some people appeared in the forest. By the time the team reached they had fled. When the team went to the spot and saw four carcasses of the national bird peacock were lying there. According to the ranger, hunters have probably hunted the peacock by making a trap. The Forest Department team has not caught any accused in this case so far. Ranger Vinod Kumar Singh said that the matter is being investigated at present. Some people are also being interrogated.

Wood smugglers and hunters active in the forest
It is worth mentioning that the case of hunting of wild animals has been coming to the fore in the Lateri North and South Forest Range for a long time. Apart from this, illegal cutting of teak trees is also done in the forests here. A large number of timber smugglers are active here. There have been incidents of clashes and firing between the forest department team and smugglers during patrolling several times.
