Tokyo: Former Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday expressed regret over allegations of illegal payments by his office in organizing a dinner ceremony for his supporters during the popular ‘Cherry Blossom’ season, though Prosecutors have not made him an accused in the case. When Abe resigned in September, he had cited poor health but critics said that the reason for his leaving the post could be the allegations.

His successor Yoshihide Suga canceled the annual ‘Cherry Blossom’ party as soon as he took over as Prime Minister, but his government was delayed due to the Corona virus prevention measures and scandals involving Abe government ministers Had to face declining support. The Tokyo District Public Prosecutor’s Office cited the lack of evidence behind the decision not to file charges against Abe. But it has formally accused an official of Abe’s long-time aide who allegedly did not provide information related to payments for ceremonies from 2016 to 2019.
