Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam worsened on Monday, claiming two lives and affecting over 3.63 lakh people in 17 districts. This information was given in an official bulletin. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one child each drowned in the floodwaters at Changa in Barpeta district and Mayong in Morigaon.

He said floods in Barpeta, Vishwanath, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, West Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara, and Tinsukia districts. More than 3,63,100 people have been affected by this. Lakhimpur is the worst-affected district with over 1.3 lakh people affected by the floods, followed by Majuli with around 65,000 people and Darrang with over 41,300 people.

Till Sunday, more than 2.58 lakh people were affected by the floods in 14 districts of the state. The ASDMA said that 950 villages are currently submerged and 30,333.36 hectares of crop area across Assam has been damaged. He said authorities are running 44 relief camps and distribution centers in 10 districts, where 1,619 people, including 321 children, are taking shelter.

The bulletin said that various relief agencies have evacuated 470 people from different parts of the state. The authorities have distributed 621.34 quintals of rice, pulses, and salt, 578.82 liters of mustard oil, 100 quintals of animal feed, and other flood relief materials. Barpeta, Vishwanath, Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Morigaon, Nalbari, and South Salmara districts have witnessed widespread erosion, the bulletin said.

The ASDMA said floodwaters damaged roads and other infrastructure in Barpeta, Darang, Golaghat, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, and Tinsukia. He said that a total of 2,56,144 domestic animals and poultry have been affected by the floods. According to a report released by the Central Water Commission, the Brahmaputra is flowing in “above normal to severe flood conditions” in Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Goalpara, Kamrup, and Dhubri districts.

He said, “Besides the tributaries of the Brahmaputra, namely Beki in Barpeta, Jia Bharali in Sonitpur, Dikhau in Sivasagar, Sankosh in Dhubri, Subansiri in Lakhimpur, Dhansiri in Golaghat, Gaurang in Kokrajhar and Puthimari in Kamrup district, there were moderate to severe floods. flowing in condition.” He said the Kushiara river (Barak and others) in Karimganj was flowing in above normal flood conditions.
