In Manipur, just a day after the opposition Congress party failed to defeat ruling BJP in the trust vote in the state assembly on Monday, the party faced a major setback after five MLAs who won the election on the party tickets resigned from the Assembly seat.
Five MLAs including the nephew of the former Chief Minister and Congress party leader O. Ibobi submitted the resignation letters to the State Legislative Assembly Speaker yesterday.
The Assembly Secretariat has issued notifications this afternoon stating that the five Assembly Constituencies represented by these MLAs are lying vacant from the forenoon of 11.08.2020 after their resignation from the membership.
The Congress MLAs who resigned from the party are Okram Henry of Wangkhei Oinam Lukhoi of Wangoi, Muhammad Abdul Nasir of Lilong, Ngamthang Haokip of Saitu and Ginsuanhau of Singhat.
Muhammad Abdul Nasir, who was acabinet minister in the former O. Ibobi led Congress government told to media persons that the Congress party won 28 seats in the present Assembly and could not form the government.
Moreover, the candidate sponsored by the party in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha election in Manipur was defeated. These clearly showed that the people of Manipur do not trust the party under its leader O. Ibobi Singh.
He said, the BJP led State government has been implementing people oriented welfare schemes and projects from the past many years. People of the State have trust in the BJP led government.
Criticising the Congress party, Muhammad Abdul Nasir said, while the State government has been concentrating on prevention of COVID-19 pandemic in the State, Congress leaders have not shown any interest in the issue and running after for political power.
Considering all these facts, he resigned from being MLA before the public of his Constituency criticized him.
After the resignation of the five MLAs, the 60 members Manipur Assembly’s strength has shrinked to 48 members.
Three MLAs resigned and four MLAs were disqualified earlier. At present, the ruling BJP and its coalition party’s strength is 28.
