LONDON: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson admitted on Tuesday that it was wrong to appoint a tainted member of parliament to a key position in the government, amid mounting pressure on him, following which the government’s leaders, including Finance Minister Rishi Sunak. Senior cabinet ministers resigned.

Johnson said he was “deeply sorry” that he appointed him to the official position of “deputy chief whip” even after he learned of a misconduct complaint against suspended MP Chris Pincher.

Soon after the resignation of UK Health Minister Sajid Javid, British Indian-origin minister Sunak shared his resignation on Twitter. The resignations of the ministers would prove to be a major setback for Johnson’s leadership. Earlier, a former bureaucrat had commented on Downing Street’s way of handling the charges against recently suspended MP Chris Pincher.

Sunak tweeted, “The public rightly expects the government to act in a fair, efficient and serious manner.”
