The voice that defined Indian film music for nearly eight decades has fallen silent. Asha Bhosle, the versatile, powerhouse performer who recorded over 12,000 songs, passed away on Sunday at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. She was 92. The news, later confirmed by the Maharashtra government, plunged the entire nation into grief, with tributes pouring in from political leaders, the film fraternity, and millions of fans across the globe.

Asha Bhosle, the younger sister of the late legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, was a master of musical chameleonics. From soulful ghazals like “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” to cabaret numbers like “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja,” her voice navigated genres with effortless ease. She held a Guinness World Record as the most recorded artist in music history. For her immense contribution, she was bestowed with the nation’s highest civilian honors, including the Padma Vibhushan and the Maharashtra Bhushan.

Public Tribute and State Honors

According to an official statement issued by the Government of Maharashtra, her mortal remains will be kept for public viewing on April 13, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The venue for this tribute is her residence, Casa Grande Co-op Housing Society, located on Senapati Bapat Marg, in the Lower Parel area of Mumbai. This will be the only window for fans and citizens to pay their final respects.

Following the public tribute, the state government has announced that the funeral of the national icon will be conducted with full state honors. The procession will move from her residence to the Late Bhagoji Keer Hindu Crematorium, P. P. Jambhekar Maharaj Path, Shivaji Park, Dadar, Mumbai. The final rites and cremation are scheduled to take place at 4:00 PM.

Earlier on Sunday, Asha Bhosle’s son, Anand Bhosle, had also addressed the media, providing similar, although slightly different, times for the public viewing. For clarity, the final official statement from the Maharashtra government has streamlined the timing from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at her residence, confirming that the earlier communicated slot of 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM will now follow the government-mandated window.

National Tributes and Impact

The passing of Asha Bhosle, along with her sister Lata Mangeshkar, a few years ago, marks the conclusion of a golden era of Indian playback music. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep grief, stating, “I am anguished by the passing of Asha Bhosle Ji. Her incredible versatility, ranging from classical to contemporary, struck a chord with every generation. She enriched Indian music for decades, and her legacy will never fade. My condolences to her family and countless fans.”

Across Mumbai and the rest of India, radio stations are playing her timeless hits, and fans are posting memories, ensuring her voice echoes even as the nation prepares to bid her a final, state-honored farewell.
