Chennai: Film actress and former Rampur MP Jaya Prada has been sentenced to 6 months in jail by a Chennai court. He has also been fined Rs 5,000 in connection with a petition filed by the employees of a movie theater owned by him in Raipeta, Chennai.

The cinema hall is run by Ram Kumar and Raja Babu of Chennai. The problem started when the management failed to pay ESI to the theater workers and they moved the court. Later, the actress promised to pay the full amount to the staff and appealed to the court to dismiss the case.

However, the counsel for the Labor Government Insurance Corporation objected to their appeal, after which Jaya Prada and three others connected with the case were sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Similarly, each was also asked to pay a fine of Rs 5,000.

Jaya Prada has represented Rampur on behalf of the Samajwadi Party twice in the Lok Sabha. In 2004 and 2009, he won the Rampur seat by defeating the Congress candidate. Later SP showed him the way out and then in the 2014 election he contested from Bijnor on an RLD ticket, but had to face defeat. In 2019, Jaya Prada returned to Ramur and the BJP made her its candidate. However, this time too he had to face defeat.

Jaya Prada was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time in 1996 from Andhra Pradesh. After this, in 2004, she joined the Samajwadi Party and became a Loksabha MP twice. He also contested the Lok Sabha elections from Rashtriya Lok Dal. Then later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
