Eiffel Tower shut down after bomb threat in France

Paris: There was a stir among people after receiving a threat to blow up the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the capital of France. Taking action, the administration on Saturday vacated the third floor of the tower as a precautionary measure and closed it for the public.

SETE, the organization that runs the tourist site, said a bomb disposal squad along with police were combing the area. The search area also included a restaurant located on one of the floors of the iconic tower.

Visitors were removed from all three floors of the tower and the square below it at around 1.30 pm on Saturday. A spokesperson for SETE said this is normal procedure in a situation like this which although rare.

It is noteworthy that there is a police station under the southern pillar of the monument. Its premises are under video surveillance and visitors have to go through a security check before entry.
