Taipei: A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan’s capital Taipei on Sunday, injuring a woman and damaging a car after being hit by fallen rocks. However, no death has been reported so far.
According to the Central Meteorological Bureau, the quake occurred at 1:11 pm (5:11 am international time) and was centered near the city of Yilan, about 35 kilometers (22 mi) from Taipei near the north-east coast.
The bureau reported that a few seconds after the first occurrence of the quake, there was another tremor of magnitude 5.4. The Taipei Metro system has temporarily suspended service.
The Central News Agency reported that a woman was injured after a rock fell in Taroko Park in Hualian County, South Yilan. A car was also damaged by the rockfall, but no one was injured in the incident.
