Mumbai: One of the iconic landmarks of Mumbai, the bungalow of the late Bollywood legend Dev Anand, has been sold to a real estate company for a whopping Rs 400 crore. The bungalow, located in the plush Juhu area, was the home of Dev Anand and his family for four decades, where he entertained many celebrities and dignitaries. However, after his demise in 2011, the bungalow remained vacant as his wife Kalpana Karthik and children Sunil Anand and Devina Anand moved to different cities.
According to media reports, the real estate company that bought the bungalow plans to demolish the 73-year-old structure and construct a 22-story tower in its place. The bungalow, which was built in 1950, had a sprawling garden and a spacious living room, where Dev Anand used to host parties and events. The bungalow also had a library, where Dev Anand used to read books and write scripts for his films.
Dev Anand’s son Sunil Anand, who lives in America, confirmed the bungalow sale and said that it was a difficult decision for the family. He said that the bungalow was not being maintained properly and it was becoming a security issue. He also said that the family wanted to preserve the legacy of Dev Anand and not let his bungalow become a commercial property.
Dev Anand, who is regarded as one of the greatest actors in Indian cinema, gave many super hit films in his career spanning over six decades. He was known for his charismatic personality, stylish dress, and romantic roles. He worked in many films like ‘Johnny Mera Naam’, ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, ‘Tamasha’, ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘Manzil’, ‘Amir Garib’, ‘Gambler’, ‘Mahal’ and ‘Kala Paani’. He also produced and directed many films under his banner Navketan Films. He received many awards and honors for his contribution to cinema, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Dadasaheb Phalke Awards. He passed away in London on December 3, 2011, at 88.
