Paris: Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was found guilty on Thursday of illegal financing for an unsuccessful attempt to run for re-election in 2012. Sarkozy was not present in the Court of Paris at the time of the pronouncement of the verdict.
Sarkozy is accused of spending nearly double the maximum legal amount of $27.5 million that could be spent to run for re-election. He was defeated by the socialist leader François Hollande.
Sarkozy was the President of France from 2007 to 2012 and has vehemently denied doing anything wrong. There is a possibility that he will appeal against the decision.
