Chandigarh: There has been a stir in the Mansa district of Punjab after the confirmation of African swine fever. After the virus was found in some samples collected from Talwandi Akalia village, this area has been declared an infected area. Of the affected, 735 pigs have been killed. After confirmation from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-National High-Security Animal Disease Institute, Bhopal, Animal Husbandry Department has declared strict enforcement of restrictions.

At the same time, Punjab Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, and Dairy Development Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said that prevention measures are being taken here. About 1 km area has been declared as an infected area and about 9 km area as a surveillance area. Efforts are on to prevent the disease in the district. Pigs have been killed in the area the prevention of the infectious disease affecting them. According to the World Organization for Animal Health, ASF is a highly communicable viral disease that affects domestic and wild pigs and has a 100 percent mortality rate.

This virus can survive on clothes, shoes, wheels, and other materials, it does not die easily. At the same time, humans themselves can also play a role in spreading this virus. Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said that the Punjab administration is ensuring that the deadly viral disease does not spread further. The departmental officers have also been directed to ensure that any feed or material from live or dead pigs (including wild boars), non-processed pork, pig rearing farms, or backyard pigs is taken out of the infected zone. And be sure to prevent getting into that zone.

The ministry has also ordered that no person should try to bring or take any pig or pig product in the market. Strict arrangements should be made and pigs or pig products infected with the listed diseases are prevented from being brought into the market. Earlier the viral disease was detected in Golaghat district of Assam and Wayanad in Kerala. Around 43 pigs died in Kerala and some showed symptoms of the disease. Amid fears of the disease, authorities in Punjab have killed 735 pigs among the affected. These were found in districts like Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, SBS Nagar, and Fazilka. However, the government said that it has ensured that people associated with pig farming do not suffer, and it will be compensated.
