Mumbai: The All India Sailors and General Employees Association has intervened in the matter with the Central Government, accusing China of not allowing entry to ships with Indian crew. Has appealed to help save the jobs of thousands of Indian seafarers.
The seafaring body alleges that companies are not recruiting sailors for ships going to China. The body, in a letter to Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, claimed that about 20,000 sailors were forced to sit at home due to this.
“From March 2021, if any ship is arriving at a Chinese port with an Indian employee, the Chinese government is not allowing that ship to enter the port,” the body tweeted. Copies of this letter have also been sent on behalf of the seafaring body to the Ministry of External Affairs and the sector regulator, Directorate General of Shipping.
