Wellington: New Zealand author Kerry Hulme, who was awarded the ‘Man Booker Prize’, has died. She was 74 years old. Hulme’s family members said the writer breathed her last on Monday morning in Waimat on New Zealand’s South Island. However, he did not give details of the cause of death.
Faced with problems ranging from working as a tobacco picker to not being able to finish law school, Hulme went on to become a successful writer. Hulme’s 1984 novel The Bone People was awarded the Man Booker Prize. He wrote it in about 20 years.
Hulme’s nephew Matthew Salmons told New Zealand news website Stuff, “There have been many stories about his becoming a literary legend, but he never really discussed it.” He said, “He never had the desire for fame. She has always been a storyteller.”
