Washington DC: The US lower house has passed a bill to recognize same-sex marriage after the Supreme Court’s unexpected decision on abortion. The bill has been passed at a time when US lawmakers are fearing that conservative judges may also nullify the recognition of same-sex marriage.
The Respect for Marriage Act was easily passed by 267 votes in the lower house controlled by the Democrats. At the same time, 157 Republican lawmakers voted against the bill. 47 Republican lawmakers also cross-voted in the House.
However, there remains uncertainty over whether the bill will be passed in the Senate, despite its easy passage in the lower house. Both Republican and Democrat parties have 50 MPs in the Senate. In such a situation, for the bill to be passed, Democrats will have to bring at least 10 Republican lawmakers in their favor.
Marriage is valid between man and woman
According to the Defense of Marriage Act, the current law running in America, a valid marriage can be between a man and a woman only. However, the Supreme Court in its 2013 decision invalidated that part of the Defense of Marriage Act which does not recognize same-sex marriage.
So the Supreme Court will reverse its decision
After overturning its own old decision on abortion, there is a possibility that the Supreme Court may review its decision on same-sex marriage. Let us tell you that right now the number of Conservative justices in the US Supreme Court is high, who are known for their conservative views on same-sex marriage and abortion.
