Washington: The US launched airstrikes on Sunday targeting “bases used by Iran-backed militia groups” near the border between Iraq and Syria. Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said these militia groups were using these bases to launch unmanned aerial attacks against US forces in Iraq.
Kirby said that the US military carried out attacks on two bases in Syria and one in Iraq, which is a total of three targets. Militia groups used to conduct their operations from these bases and also kept weapons here. Describing the attacks as “defensive”, he said the attacks were in response to “ongoing attacks by Iran-backed groups targeting US interests in Iraq”.
“The United States has taken the necessary, appropriate, and deliberate action to reduce the risk of a worsening of the situation and to send a clear message to stop the attack,” Kirby said.
