New Delhi: In a groundbreaking medical procedure, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has successfully performed its first-ever double kidney transplant. The complex surgery was executed by a collaborative team from the Surgical Department and Nephrology Department, in conjunction with the Organ Recovery Banking Organization (ORBO).
The recipient, a 51-year-old woman who was dependent on dialysis, received both kidneys from a 78-year-old donor. The donor, who had suffered a severe head injury leading to a brain-dead declaration, had her organs donated with the consent of her family. The unique aspect of this transplant was the placement of both kidneys on the right side of the recipient’s body, one atop the other.
Dr. Asuri Krishna, an additional professor in the surgery department, highlighted the challenges faced due to the donor’s advanced age. Typically, a single kidney from an elderly donor might not suffice for a patient reliant on dialysis. However, in this exceptional case, it was decided that both kidneys would be transplanted into the same patient to ensure adequate function.

The operation, which took place on December 22, was deemed a success, and the details have been released to the media after careful monitoring of the patient’s recovery. This medical achievement not only represents a significant advancement for AIIMS but also offers new hope for patients awaiting life-saving organ transplants.
