Tokyo: After 12 years, Japan and South Korea are on the way to improving their relations. It is believed that the fear of China and North Korea is troubling both countries, so to increase their strength, they are promising firm friendship. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol met on the sidelines of the summit. Both promised to rekindle their spoiled relationship.
According to CNN’s report, the President of South Korea was on a two-day visit, during which talks were to be held on some important agendas like economic cooperation between the two countries. It is believed that under pressure from the US, South Korea wants to rectify its 12 years of deteriorating relations with Japan. Yoon has also declared his support for a full normalization of the military intelligence-sharing agreement with Japan in the wake of North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile launches.
North Korea fired a missile 1 hour before talks between the two countries
It has been said in the report that just a few hours before the visit, North Korea fired its fourth ballistic missile. In a joint statement on Thursday, Kishida said Japan and South Korea have decided to resume bilateral security talks in response to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. Yoon said, “I believe that both countries should be able to respond to North Korea’s nuclear missile test.”
What was the dispute between the two countries?
South Koreans accused the Japanese military of forcing women to work in brothels during their colonization. After this case, South Korea had to cancel its military intelligence-sharing agreement with Japan in 2019. The bitterness between the two countries dates back to Japan’s colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula a century ago. However, in 1965, relations between the two countries became normal.
