Air India Hikes Fuel Surcharges as Jet Fuel Prices Double

Air India and Air India Express have introduced a new fuel surcharge structure for both domestic and international routes, effective April 8, 2026, in response to a 100% surge in global aviation fuel costs driven by the ongoing West Asian conflict.

Key Points

  • Domestic Price Shift: Surcharges move from a flat rate to a distance-based model, ranging from ₹299 to ₹899.
  • International Hikes: Long-haul travelers face additional fees of up to $280 per sector starting April 10.
  • Energy Crisis: Global jet fuel prices jumped from $99.40 per barrel in February to $195.19 by late March.
  • Flight Disruptions: Over 10,000 international flights by Indian carriers have been cancelled since the conflict began six weeks ago.
  • Government Intervention: The Ministry of Petroleum and Civil Aviation has capped domestic fuel price increases at 25% to mitigate the impact on airlines.

The six-week conflict between Iran and Israel has fundamentally disrupted the global energy market and the aviation industry. Following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and significant airspace restrictions, crude oil prices have soared above $130 per barrel. For airlines, the impact is even more severe, as the “crack spread”, the cost of refining crude into jet fuel, has nearly tripled from $27.83 to $81.44 per barrel in just one month.

Air India stated that these surcharges are necessary to maintain operations in “one of the most challenging fuel cost environments” ever faced. Despite these increases, the airline continues to absorb a substantial portion of the added expenses, as the surcharges do not fully offset the 100% rise in jet fuel prices reported by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

New Distance-Based Domestic Structure

Transitioning from its previous flat rate of ₹399, Air India Group has implemented a calibrated, distance-linked grid for all domestic flights. Effective from 09:01 hrs IST on April 8, 2026, the following charges apply:

Flight Distance (km)Revised Fuel Surcharge
0 to 500₹299
501 to 1,000₹399
1,001 to 1,500₹549
1,501 to 2,000₹749
Above 2,000₹899

International Surcharges and Long-Haul Impact

For international travel, where no similar government price controls exist on fuel, the surcharges are significantly higher. Fees for SAARC nations and West Asia will take effect on April 8, while longer routes to Europe, North America, and Australia will see the new rates applied from 00:01 hrs IST on April 10, 2026.

Revised International Surcharges (Per Sector):

  • SAARC (excl. Bangladesh): $24
  • West Asia / Middle East: $50
  • Southeast Asia (excl. Singapore): $100
  • Singapore: $60
  • Africa: $130
  • Europe (including UK): $205
  • North America / Australia: $280

Latest Updates and Passenger Advisory

The conflict has forced Indian carriers to reroute many flights to Europe and North America, adding hours to journey times and further increasing fuel consumption. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, daily flights to the Middle East have dropped from an average of 350 to just 90 since late February.

Note for Travelers: Passengers who booked tickets before the April 8 or April 10 deadlines will not be subject to the new surcharges. However, any modifications to existing itineraries that require a fare recalculation will trigger the new fee structure.

While the government’s 25% cap on domestic fuel price hikes offers some relief, Air India’s losses are projected to reach ₹20,000 crore for the 2026 fiscal year if the current energy crisis persists. The airline has indicated it will review these surcharges periodically as market conditions evolve.
