Mumbai: In a significant development, the Central Railway has initiated a 63-hour mega block to widen platforms at two crucial stations: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai and Thane. This ambitious project aims to enhance passenger convenience and accommodate longer trains.
Impact on Commuters
- Cancellation of Services: During this mega block, a total of 930 local train services have been canceled, affecting both local and long-distance trains. Passengers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during this period.
- Late Trains: Due to the block, trains are running behind schedule by 20 to 25 minutes. Office-goers and daily commuters are facing challenges.
- Crowd Management: Surprisingly, passengers have responded positively to the railways’ appeal, resulting in less crowding at Kalyan and Dombivali stations.
Platform Widening and Benefits
- Thane Station: The widening work at Thane station, which would typically take three to six months, is being expedited using innovative technology. Once completed, the extended platforms will accommodate amenities like escalators and broader staircases for Foot Over Bridges (FOBs).
- CSMT: At CSMT, platforms 10 and 11 are being extended, allowing long-distance trains with 24 coaches to halt instead of the previous 16. Additionally, this mega block enables the implementation of interlocking, signal systems, and overhead wires.
Travel Advisory
- Alternate Means: To reduce passenger numbers during the block, establishments are encouraged to allow staff to work from home or explore other travel options.
- Service Limits: From Friday midnight until Sunday afternoon, Central Railway services will operate only between CSMT and Byculla and Harbor Margika and Wadala.
