Tehran: The land of Iran was shaken by a strong earthquake on Saturday. The earthquake was so strong that its tremors were felt as far as Qatar, UAE, and China. Iranian media put the magnitude of the quake at 6.1, while according to the US Geological Survey it was a 6.0-magnitude. AFP quoted Iran’s state TV as saying that at least five people were killed and 44 were injured in the quake.
This earthquake occurred at 1.32 pm. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was 100 kilometers southwest of the port city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province and 10 kilometers below ground. According to AFP, a few minutes before this major earthquake, there was another aftershock of 5.7 magnitudes. Later also at least 7 tremors were felt.
Relief and rescue operations are underway in Sayeh Khosh village, near the epicenter of the earthquake. About 300 people live in this village. It was told that many buildings have been damaged due to this earthquake. People came out on the streets out of fear. Iran is considered very active in terms of earthquakes. There is about one earthquake every day.
In November last year, two consecutive earthquakes of magnitude 6.4 and 6.3 struck Iran’s Hormozgan province, in which one person was reported to have died. Iran’s deadliest earthquake occurred in 1990, which measured 7.4. About 40,000 people were killed in this watershed in the northern region of the country. In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake devastated the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people. In 2017, a 7-point magnitude earthquake killed 600 people in western Iran.
