Why is Engineers Day celebrated on 15th September?
Actually, this day is celebrated on 15 September on the special occasion of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya i.e. the birthday of M Visvesvaraya. This day is celebrated to honor the hard work and dedication of all the engineers of the country who are making a very important contribution to the development of the country. Due to this people’s life is becoming better and easier.

Who was M Visvesvaraya?
Significantly, Visvesvaraya was also known as Sir MV throughout the country. He was born on 15 September 1861 in Kaballapur, Mysore. He was from a Telugu family. Sir MV was awarded the Bharat Ratna. He used to do a government job as an engineer. Due to the works done by him in Mysore, he was called the Father of Modern Mysore. Sir MV, in collaboration with the Government of Mysore, had established many factories, and educational institutions.

Sir MV is credited and known for inventing the Block System, i.e., automated doors that close in the conditions of overflow. He was the chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore as well as the chief designer of the flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad.

Awards and achievements
Due to his outstanding contribution to society, the Government of India conferred ‘Bharat Ratna’ on this legend in the year 1955.” He was also awarded the British knighthood by King George V, and hence has the honorific “sir”.

In 1917, in Bengaluru, Visvesvaraya established Government Engineering College, which was later renamed as University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering to pay him tribute.

A role model
Apart from being an engineer and an educator, he was highly industrious. Sir M. Visvesvaraya was a member of the Governing Council of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Later, he would become a member of the Tata Iron and Steel governing board. Besides, Sir M. Visvesvaraya has also authored two books in his illustrious career – Reconstructing India and Planned Economy of India.

The legend passed away in the year 1962, but his legacy and spirit still lives on in the minds of young engineers committed to nation-building.
