New Delhi: More than 50 lakh registered vehicles in Delhi are more than 15 years old. Delhi ranks third in terms of vehicles older than 15 years in the entire country. Of these, 70 percent are more than 20 years old. Karnataka is on the top of this list. The number of vehicles over 15 years old in the state is around 70.1 lakhs. According to the government data, Uttar Pradesh is the second place where 56.5 lakh vehicles are more than 15 years old.
According to the information given in Parliament last week by the Road Transport Ministry, at least 4 crore vehicles registered in the country are more than 15 years old. Half of these vehicles are more than 20 years old. Actually, the number of these vehicles can be more. These data are taken from the digitized vehicle data of the vehicle vehicle central vehicle registration database. This excludes figures from the three major states Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.
These figures are important because the government will compulsorily de-register 15-year-old commercial and 20-year-old personal vehicles, failing the fitness test from June 1, 2024. An official said that at present there is no system to de-register the vehicles. Therefore, there may be a large number of vehicles that are not being used, but which are still in the category of registered weeks.
The government is taking a number of measures to discourage people from keeping old vehicles. They also include green tax. All vehicles older than eight years will have to pay green tax. This can be 10-25 percent of the road tax. This proposal has been approved by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways as part of several important changes for environmental safety. States will be consulted in this matter before notifying the proposal. The proposal has been sent to the states.
