New Delhi: Russia has limited access to Facebook amid the invasion of Ukraine. The Facebook accounts of many Russian news institutions have been limited. Russian regulatory body Roskomnadzor said in a statement that the Russian media regulatory body has accused the American company of censorship, saying it violated the rights of the Russian public. Meanwhile, Facebook said it has refused to block fact-checking and labeling content from Russian-owned news agencies. However, it is not yet clear what the Russian media regulator’s ban actually means.
On the other hand, the situation is not clear from Facebook’s side as well. It is not yet clear how this will affect Facebook’s other services, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. The Russian media regulator has called on Facebook to immediately lift sanctions imposed on Russian news agency RIA, TV channel Zvezda and pro-Kremlin news sites Lenta.Ru and Gazeta.Ru.
What Facebook said
However, the Facebook company has ignored this demand of Russia. Sir Nick Clegg, Global Vice President of Facebook company Meta, has said that the Russian authorities ordered us to stop the independent fact-checking and leveling of news content we do. We have refused this. However, we have made it clear that we want Russians to continue to use Meta’s platform. Nick said that the general public is using Facebook and expressing their feelings against the action.
