Geneva: The United Nations’ top human rights body told Thursday that it would discuss the ‘pathetic human rights situation’ of Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem (Jerusalem). Will hold a special session next week. The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will meet on 27 May at the request of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) convenor Pakistan (Pakistan).
The UNHRC has 47 member countries and a day has been set for this special session to discuss the recent violence between Palestinians and Israelis as part of a decades-old conflict in West Asia.
Council spokesman Ronaldo Gomez said that more than 60 countries – including members and observers – have supported the special session so far. He said that 20 countries supported organizing special sessions. According to Gomaz, the special session requires the support of one-third of the members.
