Kyiv: After weeks of fierce fighting, the Ukrainian army has left the devastated areas in the eastern part of the country and started moving toward its strongholds. A regional office of the Ukrainian army has given this information. Most of the industrial city’s area has been devastated by Russian military bombings on the city of Svyarodonetsk, considered the administrative center of Ukraine’s Luhansk region.
Before the Russian invasion, the city’s population was about one million, which has now come down to just 10 thousand. A large number of people have migrated from the city. Ukrainian soldiers fought off Russian forces before returning to the huge Azot chemical factory on the outskirts of the city of Svyarodonetsk. Ukrainian soldiers fought the Russian army in underground bases in the city. About 500 common people had also taken shelter in these places.
In recent days, Russian troops have captured most of Svyarodonetsk and the neighboring city of Lysychansk in an effort to encircle Ukrainian forces. Russia primarily targeted the cities of Svyarodonetsk and Lysychansk with the aim of capturing the entire Donbas region, and both these cities were subjected to fierce attacks. 95 percent of the Luhansk region of the Donbas has come under Russian occupation. In addition, half of Donetsk, another province of the Donbas, has also been controlled by Russian forces and separatists.
