Washington: In an effort to reverse the victory of newly elected President Joe Biden in the US, some Republican leaders have sued Vice President Mike Pence.
According to reports, as a last legal effort, Louis Gohmert, a Texas lawmaker, filed a lawsuit with 11 residents of Arizona on Sunday. The Republican Party appointed these 11 people as electors. Pence will preside over a joint session of Congress a week later where the Electoral College Votes won by Biden and President Donald Trump will be matched. The electors have already voted two weeks ago. Biden received 306 electoral votes while Trump received 232 electoral votes.
The lawsuit calls for Pence’s role in counting the electoral votes from states and paving the way for Biden’s victory at a January 6 congressional meeting. The lawsuit challenged the Electoral Counting Act of 1887. The Act provides that the Vice-President shall announce the results. The lawsuit against Pence requests a Texas federal judge to repeal the law as unconstitutional.
Law experts say that this petition will not last. Trump has refused to give up Biden. Trump has been consistently claiming his victory and has also pressured Republican lawmakers to come forward for a legal fight.
