Cairo (Egypt): The United Nations says torrential rains have caused massive destruction in Sudan, affecting more than 50,000 people. The United Nations Humanitarian Work Coordination Office (UNOCHA) said late Wednesday that 14 of Sudan’s 18 provinces have been experiencing heavy flood-rains over the past several days. The report states that North Darfur, White Nile, Sennar and Kasla provinces are affected by the storms and floods.
“The Sudan Meteorological Authority has warned that most parts of the country are likely to receive more heavy rains during August and September, causing further flooding,” UNOCHA said. Last week, 1,200 homes were destroyed and at least five people died across the country due to the fall of the bout dam in Blue Nile province due to heavy rains. The government of Sudan and humanitarian agencies are monitoring the situation and providing assistance to the affected people. According to the United Nations, between July and August last year, flooding in 16 provinces of Sudan killed a total of 78 people.
