Cairo: Sudan has said it has signed an agreement with the United States that effectively prevents future African countries from filing compensation lawsuits in US courts. The statement came after Washington decided to remove Sudan from its list of countries sponsoring terrorism.
The Sudanese Ministry of Justice said the agreement has also been reinstated in US courts in what is known as the Sudanese government’s sovereign defense. The agreement comes after a year-long negotiation between the Trump administration and Sudan’s new leadership.
Sudan’s Justice Minister Nasreddin Abdulbari said the agreement allows Sudan to “resolve historic responsibilities with the United States and restore normal relations, as well as move towards democracy and improve economic conditions.” The agreement was signed Friday at the U.S. State Department, the ministry said.
