New Delhi: In a recent report, the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns about child vaccination in India. While some progress has been made, millions of children are still missing out on crucial vaccines.
The Figures Unveiled:
- 2021 vs. 2023: In 2021, a staggering 27.3 lakh children in India were not vaccinated. However, there’s some improvement: by 2023, this number decreased to 16 lakh.
- Zero-Dose Countries: India isn’t alone. Countries like Ethiopia, Congo, Sudan, and Indonesia also struggle with zero-dose vaccinations in 2023.
- Measles Control: The WHO and the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) jointly reported that around 16 lakh Indian children missed their first dose (MCV 1) of the measles vaccine in 2023. In 2022, this number was 11 lakh.
India’s Immunization Program: What’s Missing?
India’s Universal Immunization Program provides 12 essential vaccines free of cost to children. These include BCG, OPV, Hepatitis B, Pentavalent, Rotavirus, DPT, and TT vaccines. Despite this program, India faces challenges in achieving full vaccination coverage.
WHO’s Call to Action: Bridging the Gap
The WHO emphasizes that efforts must be intensified across South-East Asia. Every child deserves protection, and no section of society should be left behind. It’s time for India to prioritize vaccination and ensure a healthier future for all.
