Ranil Wickremesinghe sworn in as interim President of Sri Lanka today

Colombo: Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe was on Friday sworn in as interim president until he is elected as Gotabaya Rajapakshe’s successor, amid fierce political turmoil in Sri Lanka. Let us tell you that Rajapaksa resigned after demonstrations against his government for not being able to handle the economy of the bankrupt country. With this, he left the country and went to the Maldives first and then to Singapore.

In this regard, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement that Chief Justice Jayanta Jayasuriya has administered the oath of office to Wickremesinghe (73) as the acting President of Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abhayawardene on Friday officially announced that Rajapaksa had resigned. Rajapaksa resigned two days after leaving the country amid growing public outcry against himself and his family.

Rajapaksa, who fled from Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday, announced his resignation on July 13 amid heavy protests. But, in view of the deteriorating conditions, instead of resigning, he fled the country and fled to the Maldives.

But then Gotabaya had to move from there to Singapore in view of the growing opposition in the Maldives. On the other hand, Singapore’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed on the matter that Gotabaya has got permission to enter the country on a private visit. Along with this, the Ministry of External Affairs has also made it clear that no request for asylum has been made by Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
