New Delhi: The deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar is over. Despite several appeals and warnings, lakhs of people have not linked their PAN and Aadhaar (PAN-Aadhaar Link). The Income Tax Department has also now decided that it will not extend the date further. In such a situation, those who have not completed this work by June 30, will now have to link it by paying a penalty of Rs 1000. But, the biggest loss has been that such people will not be able to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) for 2022-23.

In fact, the Income Tax Department has issued a notification clearly saying that if someone does not link his PAN-Aadhaar till the deadline, then his PAN will become useless from July 1, 2023. Any work that requires PAN cannot be done without re-activation. Now two taxpayers want to activate their PAN again, they will get this opportunity only after paying a fee of Rs 1000. PAN will be operative only when it is linked to Aadhaar. But, the problem comes here that even after paying a penalty of Rs 1000, taxpayers will not get a chance to file income tax returns.

Why increased the concern of taxpayers
The Income Tax Department has clearly stated in its notification that those PAN holders who want to make their card operative again by paying a penalty of Rs 1000, will have to wait for 30 days even after depositing the fees. During this, they will not even be able to use their PAN. This decision alone has given sleepless nights to the taxpayers. For those who have to file their ITR and do not have a PAN-Aadhaar link, filing an income tax return this year will also be difficult.

What is the whole process?
According to the notification of the Income Tax Department, to reactivate the inoperative PAN card, one has to go through a long process. For this, first of all, a penalty of Rs 1000 will have to be paid and after getting the receipt, it will have to fill out a form to link PAN and Aadhaar. After this, you will have to wait for 30 days and then your PAN will become operative again.

Why is the problem in filling ITR
Through this guideline of the Income Tax Department, the inoperative PAN will be activated again, but this process will take 30 days. This means that if you want to activate the PAN by paying a fee of Rs 1000 today July 3, then you will have to wait till August 2. Since the deadline for filing ITR is July 31, such taxpayers will miss filing their returns. This can create a big problem.
