Over 2.75 lakh children, mostly girls, vanish in India in five years; Madhya Pradesh worst affected

New Delhi: In the last five years, more than 2 lacks, 75 thousand children have gone missing across the country. There are 2 lacks, 12 thousand girls among the missing children. The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development gave this information in the Lok Sabha last week.

According to the figures presented by Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani in the Lok Sabha, a total of 2,75,125 children went missing from 2018 to June 2023, out of which 2,12,825 are girls. According to the information given in the Lok Sabha, 2 lahks, 40 thousand (2,40,502), children were traced, out of which 1,73,786 (1.73 lacks) are girls.

Smriti Irani told in a written reply that the Child Helpline of the Central Government is working across the country to find the missing children. There is also a Track Child portal to trace missing children.

A maximum number of children have gone missing from Madhya Pradesh. The number of missing children in Madhya Pradesh is more than 61 thousand. West Bengal is number two in the case of missing children. More than 49 thousand children of this state are missing. According to the report, the maximum number of children go missing in seven states Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, and Chhattisgarh. The total number of missing children in these states is 2 lakh, 14 thousand, 664. That is, 78 percent of the total missing children are from these seven states.
