Abuja: Mohamed Barkindo, Secretary-General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), has passed away. Nigerian officials announced this on Wednesday. A spokesman for Nigeria’s petroleum ministry told the Associated Press that OPEC Secretary-General Barkindo died late Tuesday. He was 63 years old.
Vienna-based OPEC did not immediately comment on his death. National Petroleum Company of Nigeria Ltd. The Managing Director of Mele Kyari tweeted the news of Barkindo’s death. “Barkindo’s death is a great loss to his family, public sector power company NNPC, our country of Nigeria, OPEC, and the global energy community,” he said.
Nigeria’s Barkindo had been leading the crude oil block since August 2016. He had guided the group well during his tenure as the head of OPEC. He also played a role in keeping the various members of OPEC together.
