The report ‘Child Labour:
Global Estimates 2020, Trends and Road Forward’ was released two days before World Day Against Child Labor (June 12). It said progress towards stopping child labor has stalled for the first time in 20 years. Whereas between 2000 and 2016, the number of children in child labor decreased by 9.4 crores.
The report points to an increase in the number of children in the age group of 5 to 11 years in child labor, which is more than half of the total number of child laborers in the world.
According to the report, “The number of children in child labor has increased to 160 million worldwide. This has increased by 84 lakhs in the last four years. Millions of more children are at risk of turning to child labor due to the impact of COVID-19.
Dr. Yasmin Ali Haque, the representative of UNICEF India, said that the coronavirus epidemic has clearly emerged as a crisis for child rights, increasing the risk of child labor increasing with many more families being extremely poor.
