Patna: Amidst the Coronavirus epidemic, a big difference has come to the fore in the figures related to deaths in Bihar. In a recent report, it is being said that since the beginning of the Covid-19 epidemic in the state i.e. from March 2020 to May 2021, 2 lakh 51 thousand more deaths have been registered under the Civil Registration System (CRS) than the previous years. While the official death toll from Covid in the state is 5163. According to the World Health Organization, the difference between the total deaths in times of crisis and the expected deaths in normal circumstances is called access mortality.

According to the Hindustan Times report, the number of deaths recorded under CRS in Bihar is 48.6 percent more than the official figures of Covid-19. For data analysis, the CRS data from the pre-epidemic period (January 2015 to February 2020) was averaged. There was 2 lakh 51 thousand 53 ‘more deaths’ since the onset of Covid-19 than in the four-year period before the onset of the pandemic (2015-2019). Out of these, 1 lakh 26 thousand more such deaths were recorded in the first five months of 2021, whereas, the number of deaths due to Covid-19 in this period was 3 thousand 766.

Similarly, many other media organizations had also analyzed the data and informed about the calculation of death figures in different states. Such estimates were reported from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. In Kerala, this difference was 0.42, while in Uttar Pradesh this number was 43 times.

The World Health Organization has also estimated that the number of Covid-19 deaths could be two-three times higher than the official figures. Apart from this, the reason for the increase in the CRS figures is also the improvement in the number of deaths registered in the country. According to the annual report on CRS 2019 ‘Vital Statistics’ in the report, when only 20.7% of deaths in the country were medically certified, the registration of deaths in India has improved to over 90%.

Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey has said that he cannot comment on the CRS data, but all deaths related to Covid-19 are verified by the DM and Civil Surgeon.
