Alibaug: The famous white onion of Alibaug in Raigad district in Maharashtra has got a ‘Geographical Indication’ (GI), giving it a unique identity and paving the way for a wider market. The officials of the Agriculture Department gave this information.

Officials said that Alibaug’s white onion was mentioned in the official gazette only in 1983. He told that this onion has medicinal properties and is used in heart disease, cholesterol control, and insulin production.

An official said, “The agriculture department here and the Konkan Agricultural University had given the GI application on January 15, 2019. On September 29 this year, the proposal was scrutinized at the Mumbai office of the Registrar of Patents and it was decided to give GI tag to Safed Bagh in Alibaug.” He said that this crop gives an average income of about two lakh per acre.
