New Delhi: The Indian Navy’s sixth and final Kalvari class submarine has begun sea trials at Vagsheer and is expected to be commissioned by early next year. The induction of the submarine built under Project-75 into the fleet will enhance the Navy’s combat capability at a time when China is rapidly increasing its presence in the Indian Ocean region. The Navy said, “The sixth submarine of Project-75 started its sea trials on 18 May.
It is likely to be delivered to the Indian Navy in early 2024 after the completion of sea trials at Vagshir. The submarine was launched from Kanhoji Angre Wet Basin of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in April last year. India is emphasizing its maritime capabilities with a focus on the region in the wake of growing apprehensions about China’s moves in the Indian Ocean. Project-75 involves the construction of six submarines in the country itself.
These submarines are being built at Mumbai-based MDL in collaboration with the French Naval Group. Five Kalvari class submarines have already been inducted into the Indian Navy. “MDL has delivered three Project-75 submarines in 24 months and the commencement of sea trials of the sixth submarine is a significant achievement,” the Navy said in a statement. This is a sign of moving towards a ‘Self-reliant India’.
