Gaborone (Botswana): A large-sized diamond weighing more than 1,000 carats has been found in a mine in the South African country of Botswana. This could be the third-largest diamond ever extracted from the mine. The high-quality, 1,098.3-carat diamond was unearthed at the Zwaneng mine earlier this month. The mine is owned by the Government of Botswana, Debswana, and De Beers Group.
Lynette Armstrong, executive managing director of Debswana, said, “We hope to be able to extract even bigger diamonds from here soon. To get a diamond of this size is perfect condition is an achievement.”
The diamond is 73 millimeters long, 52 millimeters wide, and 27 millimeters thick, making it the largest diamond found in the mines in the company’s 50-year history. Armstrong said that the largest 446-carat diamond was previously found in the Zwaneng mine in 1993.
