Mumbai: There has been a double attack of inflation on Mumbaikars today. First, the government oil companies increased the price of cooking gas and now the milk price hike has also come to a boil. In Mumbai, the price of milk has increased by Rs 5 per liter from Wednesday, March 1, 2023. The Mumbai Milk Producers’ Association (MMPA) has increased the prices of buffalo milk by Rs 5 outright. Earlier, government oil companies had increased the price of domestic cooking gas by Rs 50.
According to the rate released by MMPA this morning, now one liter of buffalo milk in Mumbai will cost Rs 85, which was earlier available for Rs 80. The new rates will continue till August 31, 2023, and after that, the association will review the prices once again. This is the second major hike in milk prices in Mumbai after September 2022.
Milk became costlier by Rs 10 in 6 months
With the speed with which the price of milk is increasing in Mumbai, it is becoming beyond the reach of the common man. Alam is that in the last 6 months, the price of milk has increased by about Rs 10 per liter. The prices were increased by Rs 5 in the first September itself. Then buffalo milk had increased from Rs 75 to Rs 80 a liter. After today’s latest hike, the price of milk has gone up to Rs.85. Due to this sudden increase in the price of milk, the budget of poor and middle-class families has deteriorated.
Cow’s milk is also expensive
Not only buffalo but also cow’s milk has become costlier in Mumbai. In February, all major cow milk producer unions in Maharashtra along with branded producers had also increased the price by Rs 2 per liter. Milk producers say that the price of milch animals kept on increasing, and the prices of their fodder and grains, tuvar, chuni, gram, etc. have also gone up by 25 percent. This is the reason why we have to increase the prices of milk as well. More than 50 lakh liters of buffalo milk is consumed daily in Mumbai.
These products will also be expensive
The effect of an increase in the price of milk is not limited to this only, but it also affects the products made from it. It is estimated that there may be a big increase in the prices of milk products like curd, ghee, and paneer in the coming times. Earlier, Amul and Mother Dairy had also increased the prices of their milk by up to Rs 2 a liter.
