London: 29-year-old Marieke Lucas from the Netherlands has become the youngest writer to win the Rijneveld International Booker Prize. This award is different from the original Booker Prize and aims to encourage more publications and reading of good novels worldwide. Rijneveld’s book ‘The Discomfort of Evening’ was declared the winner on Wednesday. It is the story of a peasant family from a staunchly Christian community in the rural Netherlands.
According to the rules, the prize money will be shared equally between the writer and translator Michelle Hutchison, £ 50,000. This year 124 books translated from 30 languages were on the run. The award is given every year to a fiction novel of any language that has been translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland
