New Delhi: A special day or a special occasion is often celebrated through Google Doodle. Today Google is giving important information about Marie Tharp to the people by making an animated video through Doodle. Because on November 21, ie on this day in 1998, the Library of Congress named Mary Tharp as one of the greatest cartographers of the 20th century. Let us tell you some interesting things about Mary Tharp.

Mary Tharp
Mary Tharp was born on July 30, 1920, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, United States. Mary Tharp was an American geologist and oceanographic cartographer. Together with Bruce Hazen, he made the first scientific map of the Atlantic Ocean floor. His work reveals the detailed topography and multi-dimensional topographic landscape of the ocean floor.

Tharp and her colleague Bruce Heezen published the first map of the Atlantic in 1957, Tharp’s drawings revealed that the seafloor is instead covered in canyons, ridges, and mountains. Over time, her maps revealed the existence of the mid-ocean ridges, a series of mountain ranges that extend over 40,000 miles around the globe.

In 1977, Tharp and Heezen published the first complete world map of ocean floors. Their work helped to prove the theory of plate tectonics, the idea that the continents move over time, which was controversial until then. The discovery revolutionized our understanding of how nearly everything on the planet works.

In addition, he made a more accurate cartographic representation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and discovered the Rift Valley along its axis. This led to a paradigm shift in Earth science that led to the acceptance of the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift.

Mary Tharp was awarded the annual Lamont-Doherty Heritage Award for pioneering oceanography. Mary Tharp died of cancer on August 23, 2006, in Nyack, New York, at the age of 86.
